Tantrums are generally a result of children not getting what they want, but as adults we know children can\u2019t always get what they want. With toddlers, tantrums are often an expression of a toddler\u2019s inability to communicate what they want. So,what to do when children act out? Here are some tips of how you and your au pair can manage and prevent toddler tantrums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Communicate and Relate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greataupairusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-27-at-9.35.46-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"312\">Toddlers have tantrums for many reasons. Sometimes they can\u2019t express what they want clearly. Sometimes they can\u2019t express the emotions they\u2019re feeling. Sometimes they don\u2019t even understand why they\u2019re upset. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some ideas of how you can relate to toddlers. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relate to how the toddler is feeling by naming their feelings. Toddlers want to be heard and understood. \u201cI understand that is upsetting\u2026\u201d \u201cI see you really want\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t match a toddler\u2019s tone. As they yell, you get quieter. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give them a chance to communicate. Ask: What would make you feel better? Do you need a hug? Do you need some space?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Distract and Divert<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greataupairusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1200-153714594-mother-and-her-child-playing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"192\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toddlers generally have a short attention span, which means they can easily be diverted to a different subject. A simple distraction will often calm a toddler quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your purposeful redirection is not working and the tantrum continues, try distracting with a new activity that will interest the toddler. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start singing a favorite song. Music often has a calming effect and your toddler may start singing too, or at least stop crying to listen!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play with one of their favorite toys so they want to join in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin reading a favorite book, they will probably stop to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If distraction and redirection isn\u2019t working, sometimes it\u2019s best to just let the toddler cry for a few minutes. Getting out their emotions can be helpful. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask if he\/she wants a hug<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand nearby for support, but allow them to cry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place the toddler in a safe place where they can work through the emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Setting Expectations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot is changing in a toddler\u2019s world. To help avoid a toddler tantrum, set expectations and forecast upcoming transitions and changes. Frame your expectations in a positive way when possible. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greataupairusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/toddler-crying.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"192\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give children warnings of coming changes, \u201cIn 5 minutes, we\u2019re going to\u2026\u201d \u201cAfter lunch we\u2019re going to\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frame expectations in a positive way, \u201cHold my hand when you cross the street\u201d v. \u201cDon\u2019t run across the street!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make expectations short and easily understood. Ask the toddler to repeat the expectation back to you, \u201cWhen we go to the store, what are we going to do?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Be a Role Model<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2183 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greataupairusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-27-at-9.40.17-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"192\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As parents and au pairs we are children\u2019s first teachers. Children learn from watching, listening, and copying us. Make sure you demonstrate the behavior you want the toddler to model. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Positive Reinforcement<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2180 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greataupairusa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-27-at-9.33.13-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"203\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help reinforce toddler behavior by rewarding behavior you want the toddler to repeat. These rewards can be tangible or intangible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intangible: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verbal praise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clapping\/high five<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hugs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tangible:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra privileges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special outings or engaging in a toddler\u2019s favorite activity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These behaviors can also be reinforced through visual cues. Set up a sticker or reward chart to reward positive behaviors.
