How Does Au Pair Matching Work?

Matching runs in both directions

This is the part that surprises families most. Matching is not an assignment. Host families browse au pair profiles, and au pairs browse host family profiles at the same time. A match happens where there is mutual interest — both sides have to choose it.

That symmetry is deliberate. An au pair who has chosen your family, rather than been allocated to it, arrives already invested in the placement working.

Talk before anyone commits

Where there is interest on both sides, families and au pairs connect and have real conversations. Use them. The questions worth asking are the specific, unglamorous ones:

• What does a Tuesday actually look like in this house?
• What childcare have you done, with what ages, and for how long?
• How do you handle a child who is upset, or refusing to cooperate?
• What are you hoping to get out of the year, beyond the job itself?
• What would make this year feel like a success to you?

Answers to those questions tell you far more than a polished profile does.

There is no pressure to decide quickly

Families sometimes feel they should say yes to the first promising candidate in case they lose them. Resist that. A rushed match that unravels in month three costs everyone far more than a few extra weeks of looking. Take the time to have honest conversations, speak to more than one candidate if you are unsure, and trust your instincts when something feels off.

Equally, if a conversation goes well and both sides feel confident, there is no virtue in delay for its own sake.

Confirming the match

When both sides feel confident, the match is confirmed and the year begins — visa paperwork, travel arrangements and pre-arrival orientation follow from there, with your sponsor guiding both parties through each step.

The families who report the best years are almost always the ones who were most honest during matching, including about the parts of their household that are not perfect.
